After a hideous display of styling (if you can even call it styling) at the previous night's People's Choice Awards, Jennifer Lawrence made somewhat of a comeback at yesterday's Critics' Choice Movie Awards in Santa Monica in a dark, romantic gown by Prabal Gurung.
Where I love the mix of texture and technique in this draped gown with leather and sheer chiffon neckline, it suffers from over-design.
You can get away with a lot in black. Layering fabrics and mad skills can bypass 'busy' by virtue of the muted tone, but there are clearly two or three details too many in this look.
She needs the swishy hip panels, or the train. And belt or mini frill peplum. The key problem is that there is so much going on around the mid-section, and the eye goes nowhere else.
At first I hated the hair but when I viewed it out of context it's bloody gorgeous. as are the encrusted clutch and diamond chandelier earrings.
This girl has hauntingly gorgeous looks. And she has an Academy Award nomination. I'm not writing this one off just yet.
